Maui the second largest island in the Hawaiian chain, with a land area of 727.3 square miles, also known as the “Valley Isle”.

Maui County is the second largest county in the State, it consist of four islands (Kahoolawe, Lanai, Maui, and Molokai) with a land area of 1,159.3 square miles.

AGRICULTURE: Diverse crops are grown on Maui, including pineapple, sugarcane, vegetables and coffee.  The popular Protea is a specialty of the  island of Maui and a variety of orchids and other flowers are grown.  Aquaculture (1996): 19 operations with a value of $403,000. 

CLIMATE: Average daily temperature, from the low 70’s to high 70’s.  Haleakala Crater’s average temperature is between 40-50°F.

EDUCATION: University of Hawaii system consist of: Maui Commmunity Colloge offers two-year degrees.  

FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS (1998): 5 banks with 22 branches, 3 savings and loans with 11 locations.

GOVERNMENT: Mayor James “Kimo” Apana governs with a 9 member county council.

HEALTH: Practices (1998): 231 Medical Doctors

PRINT AND BROADCAST MEDIA: Principal newspaper is The Maui News.  In 1997 - 4 AM and 9 FM radio stations  5 commercial TV and 3 cable TV stations.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY: On the summit of Haleakala sits 4 astronomical observatories that are used for science and the  military.  Maui High Performance Computing Center is located at The Maui Research and Technology Park and works with the Pacific Disaster Center Project.                                                                      

TOURISM: Hawaii's second most popular tourist destination is the island of Maui.
